Sky High: John Hughes meets Bryan Singer?

I watched Sky High last night while playing a little City of Villains (seemed appropriate), and while I was surprised to a degree only seen before when watching Josie and the Pussycats, I was not overwhelmed by the film.

Take an afterschool special with a superhero theme, give it a few big names and not-so-big names, make none of those names the actual stars, throw in a bunch of covers of brat pack movie songs (and apparently a “cover” of most brat pack movie plots) and set up a few twists but nothing too brain warping and you’ve got this movie with pretty good special effects.

I mainly wanted to watch to see Bruce Campbell and Lynda Carter, both of which were underutilized, Cloris Leachman, Kevin McDonald and Dave Foley were nice surprises too. And the young (?) actors were great, I think this could be a good direction for Disney to keep moving in, if the animation without Pixar doesn’t take off. I kept expecting it to be so much more cheesy than it was though it didn’t completely escape corny lines, Lynda Carter as Principal Powers saying frustratedly, “I’m not Wonder Woman, y’know!”

I wish I’d caught it in the theater, but the small screen didn’t diminish it for me. Cool flick, two martinis up!

I thoroughly enjoyed that movie in the theatre. Sky High was a great way to kill some time.

Oh it was perfect. Not that I think every movie should be watched on one computer while gaming on another, but I always feel a weird sort of pressure when I have them around the house to watch dvds when I’ve rented/bought them. I shall enjoy the movie again watching it on the couch with the big tv sometime later.
