red RoVa, red RoVa

I’m not a fan of Virginia, I lived there for a short time and hopefully I’ll never have to go back, but even so I think that this piece of crap filler article comparing Northern VA (NoVa) and the rest of Virginia (RoVa) was uncalled for in the Washington Post Style section.

Recent polls confirm the common assumption that Northern Virginians tend to be much more liberal than those in the rest of the state. In fact, NoVa seems to be a world apart from RoVa (the rest of Virginia). In NoVa, for example, when people speak of a “trailer,” they mean a movie ad, and in RoVa “sprawl” is what you do on the couch after Sunday dinner.

Among various lines attempting to point out the lack of sophistication that exists outside of NoVa, the rest of Virginians are made to look like rural backwater hicks. Oh and there’s this line: In NoVa, a lab is the family dog. In RoVa, a lab is the family meth business. I’m sorry, what?!

The byline on the article is the “Style staff” – most likely because no one wanted to own up to writing this classist fluff. The user comments on the article pretty much say it all.
