celebrity: presented without comment

Former/Ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich:

I’m blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived. I saw it all growing up.

From TIME magazine, the quote is from an interview for the February edition of Esquire. According to TIME, the White House–also–refused to comment.

Perhaps the nicest thing I could say about this is, “Maintaining your minor–and dubious–celebrity status: ur doin it wrong!”

I have been trying like hell to ignore this. I mean, the guy’s a creep, right? And no one takes him seriously, right? Yesterday, on Twitter, I was unfortunate enough to get into a (brief and snotty) discussion with Joan Walsh of salon.com over the Harry Reid debacle after she announced it was a “dumb” issue. While I realize Harry’s ignorant remarks aren’t the most pressing issue of our time, I also have to wonder if dismissing shit like that out of hand only makes way for bigger asshattery, ala Blagojevich.
