shopping: MidCity Dog Days & Alexandria Sidewalk Sale

I distinctly remember these shopping events taking place separately in the past, but this upcoming weekend is both MidCity Dog Days in DC and the Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale in Old Town and Del Ray.

I remember Dog Days last year, it was some friends’ last weekend in DC for a while, and they hadn’t really explored that part of DC, so we had brunch and popped in and out of the stores. The weather was amazing. I don’t think it will be quite as nice this year, but still should be a good time.

MidCity is in the heart of Washington, DC and includes the vibrant 14th and U Street corridors. It’s filled with independent arts and music venues, fantastic places to dine and cutting edge shops and boutiques. Every year on the first weekend of August (the hottest of the hot here in DC, hence the name) MidCity businesses come together to hold a neighborhood wide event called the Dog Days Sidewalk Festival. Founded in 2000 by Home Rule, this event has grown from a sidewalk festival including just 6 businesses to now more than 70! It truly is the best time to come explore this amazing neighborhood’s history, culture, food, shops, services, and people.

I’ve randomly been in Alexandria during the Sidewalk Sale. Not really expecting it, but coming across it. I will admit that it doesn’t work quite as well since Old Town sidewalks don’t give businesses a lot of space to put merchandise or signs outside and allow two way traffic for shopping pedestrians, but it was still fun. Especially drooling over vintage cocktail items and mid-century modern pieces…

Alexandria Sidewalk Sale shopping event

During the Annual Summer Sidewalk Sale, the streets of Alexandria are buzzing with shoppers grabbing hot summer deals. The two day event will take place throughout Old Town and Del Ray on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2, 2015.

Over 50 shops will host promotional events and clearance sales offering deeply-discounted summer merchandise and product demonstrations from some of Alexandria’s top boutiques and design stores.

In Old Town, the City of Alexandria is offering free parking at all parking meters on Saturday and Sunday. Parking in Del Ray is always free!

They’re also offering a hashtag contest, tag photos of your sidewalk sale finds to Instagram and Twitter with #SidewalkSaleALX for a chance to win a restaurant gift certificate from Bastille, Society Fair, Bistrot Royal or Virtue Feed & Grain. Not too shabby.

Unfortunately I’m more involved in trying to get rid of things in my apartment rather than bring new things in. That said… if I find myself headed in either of these directions this weekend, I won’t do any shopping but it certainly won’t hurt to browse!
