Midnighter is.. y’know, that way…

Midnighter: DC’s Gay Superhero Could Use Some Rescuing: an AfterElton article about DC Comics’ Midnighter and his new solo series with a noticeable lack of sexuality.

…the intelligent integration of his gayness is a goal at best sporadically reached. Not showing Midnighter with his lover — or in some way acknowledging his sexuality — makes him just another black-clothed violent hero, something that superhero comics don’t really need.

What’s the point of having a superhero, especially a beefcake, if they’re sexless.

It could be more an editorial skittishness about making someing “too gay,” which is ridiculous.

I agree there’s a very fine line when bringing any sort of non-mainstream character. Non-white, non-straight, non-male, non-human… they always run the risk of alienating their audience.

But considering their run in The Authority, I really think that when super baddies sexually violate a male super hero the only other reason being that he’s gay, they’ve already passed the “too gay” mark and need to do something to balance the scales. I was mentioning to a friend that there’s no way they would have had someone rape a female superhero that way, but because they need to remind us that Apollo’s gay, his character is fair game? That’s BS.
