holiday: Repeal Day!
If you don’t already know and your friendly neighborhood lush hasn’t informed you, December 5th is Repeal Day. A day to celebrate the 21st amendment… that repealed the 18th amendment, which enacted prohibition. I’ll be out enjoying a drink with friends, and there are many places in the DC area which will be celebrating with special events to mark the day. There will also be plenty of places in DC with no idea what day it is, but don’t worry as these are still viable places to go for a drink and get well and truly hammered. I would sing about it, but there’s already a good song out there about another amendment striking down a restrictive rule.
One quote that often suits my workday is from Life, the Universe, and Everything by Douglas Adams and I reflect upon it this very Friday. A very famous judge is presiding over a case and has, just moments before, asked for a glass of water:
He took another sip of water, then held it up to the light and frowned at it. He twisted it round.
“Hey, is there something in this water?” he said.
“Er, no, m’lud,” said the Court Usher who had brought it to him, rather nervously.
“Then take it away,” snapped Judiciary Pag, “and put something in it.”
Put something in it, indeed. Happy Friday and Happy Repeal Day, everyone!
