Great Sleep, Strange Dreams: COIN
I’ve had a few recent sleepless nights, mostly due to the temperature in my apartment. Hard to dial it in, expecting cooler for August and not getting it, etc. But my dreams lately have had a recurring item: COIN.
(Not the Coin 2.0 Smartcard, which, being a tech-buff, I also owned and OMG was it a horrible device.)
It mostly shows up as a side thing, or seen in a commercial in the dream. It’s like a new currency but based on what seems to be a single coin. I couldn’t tell if there were denominations, or if it was like a coin-shaped device, but I distinctly remember the sound of it coming from a COIN ATM, like a slot machine payout.
They were large yellow-gold coins, like something that would feel good in the hand, have some weight to it, if it were dropped. I suppose similar to the fantasy-setting idea of gold coinage.
Or if anyone remembers video arcades when they went over to tokens. But these were definitely of a thickness and weight that would not pass for “legal tender” right now.
I don’t remember specifics, so as far as how it was meant to work, if you needed more than one COIN, if there was “change” back from using it, I’m not sure.
It was probably inspired by cryptocurrency, and brick & mortar stores accepting, and there even being Bitcoin ATMs in a few places around town.
It also feels a little current-administration-ish, like the kind of wild idea that would be put forth to “improve” the economy. Similar to getting rid of the penny due to minting costs, as if consolidating physical money into a single form would be a good idea.
Then again, it’s a dream. I’m not looking for it to make sense. But I do distinctly remember it coming up over a few nights. Never the main point, but a background element. I’ve never really paid attention to whether my dream worlds have ever present themes or not, but I sure as heck remember COIN.
Per the MCU, dreams are glimpses of our lives in alternate universes, so maybe that’s what’s up? But mostly I’m just aware of how well or poorly I slept when I wake up. And last night, at the least, was a good night’s sleep.
If I write up a TTRPG adventure, no promises that COIN won’t make an appearance, so if anything, it’s creative fodder for the future. But honestly…? I’ll just be glad to take the better sleep going forward. 🙂
