You might not be gay, but your car is!

I can’t believe I didn’t hear about this already from BG. Vanity Fair just introduced a new online column called Stick Shift: The Gay Car Blog.

The introductory post makes it clear the use of “gay” isn’t just a car-synonym for rejected, sub-standard, or pastel-colored cars and that it isn’t necessarily characterizing the car’s owner as gay.

A car’s gayness—like gayness in general—is based in its inhabiting the margins of conventionality. A Gay Car is quirkier, more enigmatic, or more fiercely accessorized than the average vehicle. (It also likes to sleep with other Gay Cars.)

To use it in another arena, Apple is gay and Microsoft is… John McCain.

I’m sure the column will be a big hit until the novelty wears off. And I’m noticing that the gay-oriented sites gaining a bit more prominence as an alternative to the norm, OutSports, GayWheels, GayGamer. And I’m talking about sites that you can actually* open up at work because they don’t depend on amateur porn site ads for revenue.

* my office’s internet filtering software blocks GayGamer because of its content categorization: “Games;LGBT” 🙄

GayWheels.com actually had a response about this column last week that I think was pretty spot-on.
