news: he said what?

The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. — Proverbs 15:2

Michael Steele in front of the RNC logo.

Likely the only scripture this blog will see this year, but it’s the only thing that came to mind after reading the following quote from Michael Steele, chief of the RNC, about how allowing gay marriage will harm small businesses:

Now all of a sudden I’ve got someone who wasn’t a spouse before, that I had no responsibility for, who is now getting claimed as a spouse that I now have financial responsibility for. So how do I pay for that? Who pays for that? You just cost me money.

Just let the obvious insanity of that statement sink in for a minute. Now the reality… it is as illegal to ask “Are you single, married or divorced?” during a job interview as it is “Are you gay, straight or bi?” Even though some may argue that there are obvious trappings that might reveal the answer to either question, it’s still illegal to ask or act upon perceived knowledge.

In the five years I’ve been at this job, I’ve seen plenty of single co-workers become (legally) married ones. If Steele believes that a company or small business is unduly burdened by possibly having to expand insurance coverage to a new spouse, wouldn’t it be irrelevant whether the couple is straight or gay? I find myself quoting the segment of the SNL Weekend Update, Really!?!

Other stories I’m not even going to touch for fear of condemnation* or excommunication**:

  • Norma McCorvey–Roe in Roe v. Wade–now opposes abortion and was among those arrested during protests of Obama’s speech at Univ. of Notre Dame.
  • The Racially/Culturally divided “Civil War” in DC and other states is just grist for the mill of the news media right now. While I agree that it’s an important social observation, sometimes the language used in the stories–by both the reporters and either side involved–is just disappointing and insulting.

Oh well, Happy Monday all!

* Again.

** I’m actually not sure they can remove my Black Card, but I wouldn’t put it past them. After all, it’s not as if I sound black. 😈

    Yeah, I saw this the other day, and I thought to myself, Well, of course he did! It’s the New Republican Party: We’re not anti-gay because being gay is immoral. We’re anti-gay because being gay is a drag on small business! After all: The New Republican Party cares about you.

    As long as you’re not gay. Or poor. Or Latino. Or an immigrant. Or not Christian. Or black. Or….

    The thing about Ms. McCorvey that occurs to me is that no one is pro-abortion. No one wants to have an abortion – in that no woman sets out to get pregnant just so she can enjoy the ecstasy of the surgical procedure. It’s not at all pleasant or enjoyable. And I would go so far as saying that you’d have to be heartless or delusional not to have some feelings about it. It is certainly understandable that Ms. McCorvey feels sadness or regret. The sick part is pro-life fear/hate mongers who are not satisfied with a woman simply feeling bad or sad about a decision. She has to hate herself for it so much that she would join their ranks and deny other women the same freedom of choice she, though with sadness and regret, availed herself of.

    @mazzie: That’s about the best way I’ve heard it put in a long time. Ms. McCorvey reminds me of the classic supervillain team-up. “I got what I wanted, now it’s every (wo)man for themselves!” And it is the unshakable concept that continuing to legalize abortion will mean that everyone throws caution to the wind regarding sex and conception that keeps the two sides at odds.

    On a terribly improper side note, one of my favorite movies has a character trying to get pregnant just so she can see the doctor at the clinic. But he is dreamy!
