olympics: the practice of sport is a human right…

I don’t have too much to say about the Olympics being held in Sochi except that I think it was a poor location. I respect that the athletes work very hard to be the best in their sport and that they have few chances to test those skills against the best in the world… But to celebrate the games in a country that is so backwards in its views of human rights just seems wrong. Thankfully, people are not keeping quiet about it.

Today’s Google Doodle does its best to celebrate the games, while simply reminding us of the Olympic Charter:

“The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.” —Olympic Charter
