It’s Still Pride Month… Right?
I know it’s only June 2nd, but things are feeling a little too quiet around the internet for Pride, if you know what I mean.
It might be because a bunch of brands haven’t left Twitter, and haven’t fully embraced Bluesky, but those first of the month posts you usually see on social media? I’m hearing digital crickets.
That could be on me, but when I did just peek over to that old site just now, more than a few of the #Pride posts were people using the tag for hateful or unrelated posts.
I suppose I knew this month would be different because companies are cowards, but I still had a little bit of hope. I’m also not seeing a ton of brands posting Pride Highlights or featured streamers. However, it is the first of the month and if I know anything it’s that for whatever reason, companies don’t reach out to many creators until near the last minute to get involved in things.
I’m not involved in nearly as many Pride-related streaming things as I have been in previous years. I’m doing two charity events, a raid train, and that’s about it. No sponsored one-shots, no panels, no co-streaming or channel takeover opportunities. It feels about as bland as Target’s 2025 Pride merch.
With the state of the world, things feeling more muted is about par for the course. Heck, World Pride is in DC, and I won’t even be here that weekend. Having been to New York for World Pride, I can’t imagine DC trying to manage that capacity of people. So I’m giving myself a well-earned weekend getaway.
I’m always torn between wanting a nice quiet Pride month and overbooking myself to be everywhere I possibly can, but there’s no “booked and busy” energy in the air this year at all. I have scaled back my streaming a little bit to focus on weekend streams with the one weeknight being a casual cooking one, but I’m available for things.
Let’s see those blog posts, those social media posts, those creator spotlights, those queer history posts. We joke about “that one gay person” working in marketing. Now is their time to shine and break the internet.
I hope I see more “Surprise, I’m doing a thing!” posts from friends and peers. I am looking forward to Pride and Juneteenth games and streams, and maybe brands getting a little brave 2/3 of the way through the month per previous years.
I really wanted the level of support to blow the doors off on June 1st and it just felt lackluster. But it is early, maybe there’s still time to cover the internet with rainbows and pride flags. Maybe I’m just becoming that grumpy older queer person yelling at rainbow-less clouds. We’ll see how I feel a week or so from now.
Regardless, Happy Pride to everyone out there. Be your best, most authentic self. Seek out representation, family and community where you find it. Wear sunglasses and sunscreen to those Pride celebrations and go easy on the bottomless brunch offerings. Pride month is a marathon, not a sprint. (Do not expect me to take that brunch advice, however.) 💖
