video: 7-Eleven LARP

There’s a bit of a paradox in The Swanktuary. We love Mad Men but don’t really watch that many ads, unless it’s by accident. The time we see the most commercials is when watching a new show live–which is very rare–or during our standard morning coffee/internet/ready for work moments.1

7-Eleven has started a new ad campaign recently with what looks like a Hipster-In-A-Suit extolling the virtues of not only their food and drink, but of other fictional promotions in the store.2 First it was a ball pit, now it’s live action role-play, also known as LARP:

Seeing it every morning, you’d think it would get old but it cracks us up every time. I’m still on the fence on how I feel about “nerd culture” creeping into/becoming mainstream. I feel like the most quirky and weird aspects are being cherry-picked and put on display so people can point and laugh… which is what they’ve done all along, now it’s just in HD.

And while yes, I used to LARP… under advice from my lawyer and biographer, that’s all I’m going to say on the matter.

1 Possibly also while I’m cooking, but with so much else happening, I’m not going to try fast forwarding through commercials and risk dropping the remote into a saucepan.

2 Oddly enough, a non-fictional promotion starting in DC is 7-Eleven stores carrying fresh produce. Not sure how well that will go over, but making fresh fruit and vegetables more accessible has got to be a good thing, right?

I’d say your secret’s safe with me, but we both know that’s not true.
