Danger zone

My building has an e-mail listing which I just joined after the Condo Board president advised me that there had been some muggings in the area and to join the list to keep up to date.
Police stations send out e-mails to those interested about crimes in the area. Here’s a recent one about the area around my building.

YESTERDAY THE FOLLOWING ROBBERIES OCCURRED:
IN BROAD DAYLIGHT AT 1245 HOURS – MR MIJIAS WAS ROBBED AT KNIFEPOINT
BY 2 HISPANIC MALES OF $910.00 – THIS OCCURRED AT 16TH AND IRVING –
SUSPECTS LAST SEEN RUNNING SOUTH ON 16TH
DURING MIDNITES:
AT 0330 HOURS – MR FELIPE WAS ROBBED BY SEVEN MALES WHO JUMPED HIM
IN THE 3000 BLK OF MT PLEASANT STREET – THEY TOOK $600.00 FROM HIM
AND RAN DOWN THE STREET
AT 0115 HOURS /14TH AND PERRY – MR CRUZ WAS APPROACHED BY THREE
SUBJECTS, ONE WITH A GUN AND WAS ROBBED OF $420.00 – LOOKOUT FOR A
HISPANIC MALE AND TWO BLACK MALES – LAST SEEN JUMPING INTO A GREY
HONDA ACCORD AND GOING EAST IN THE 1300 BLK OF SPRING RD
AT 0350 HOURS THE 7-11 AT 14TH AND COLUMBIA RD GOT ROBBED WHEN A
YOUNG MALE SUBJECT WENT TO THE COUNTER TO BUY A SODA BUT SNATCHED
$60.00 FROM THE REGISTER – LOOKOUT FOR A BLACK MALE, 6’0″, WITH BLUE
JEANS AND CLIPPERS JERSEY ON
The amounts stolen really grabbed me.. $910, $600, $420… WHO THE HELL is walking around with this kind of money, either in broad daylight or after midnight? Maybe my danger/common sense is turned way up, but I don’t even feel comfy taking out $50 from an ATM when surrounded by plenty of light and people, day or night, I certainly wouldn’t walk around with that kind of money at all.
Just one more reason not to leave my apartment and become a hermit.
