Deee-Lite’s ‘Groove Is in the Heart’ Turns 25

People Magazine takes a look at perhaps one of the ultimate party tunes out there, Deee-Lite’s much beloved “Groove Is In The Heart“.

“Groove Is in the Heart” was an immediate hit, reaching No. 1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play Chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also hit No. 1 for a week in Australia and was named the single of the year by both NME and The Village Voice. Both the song and album went gold before the end of the year, and though the group couldn’t replicate the success of the album, its members have continued their careers as DJs since then.

It’s a little bit sobering to think that I have been grooving–pardon the pun–to World Clique for 25 years now. It’s still one of my frequently played albums, I saw Deee-Lite in concert twice, once during the ‘Groove’ era and next during their Dewdrops In The Garden rave-esque phase. As old as I felt during that second concert, I feel somewhat ancient now.

The chills that you spill up my back, keep me filled
With satisfaction when we’re done, satisfaction of what’s to come

And yet… I will never stop grooving.
