urbanbohemian at PAX Unplugged 2023!

It’s that time again. PAX Unplugged is just a few weeks away, and just like last year, I have something cool to share before getting to my schedule.

I’m a PAX Together Intersection (PTI) Fellow this year, along with Pherin Bailey, Eugenio Vargas, and Cassie Walker. The PTI Fellowship is a new program created to highlight BIPOC game developers and content creators who are rising luminaries and influencers in the gaming industry.

Look, ma! I’m a rising luminary!

I don’t take anything for granted, but wow has my PAX Unplugged journey felt like a strange one, that’s only full of ups. The more I do in the gaming space, the more I’m amazed that while it took me a long time to reconnect with TTRPGs, that the space is far more welcoming, diverse and innovative than ever.

But seriously, PAX Unplugged 2023 is two weeks away and because I’m part of the PTI Fellowship, my schedule sort of suddenly got more busy than I had planned. Before being invited, I wasn’t on that many panels, and had decided to take this year a little more casually. Well… Surprise! Surprise! In addition to panels and live shows, there will be a chance to play games with me in the PAX Together Intersection Room, some you can try to sign up for ahead of time, others will be in-person.

Now I just have to learn how to run a casual game of Thirsty Sword Lesbians within the next two weeks! 😅 It will be my first time doing the “professional game master” thing and running a game for people I might not know. Maybe I can dispel the idea that everyone who plays TTRPGs is just itching to get behind the DM screen and run an adventure. Or I’ll just “fake it ’til I make it” and hope that everyone has a good time.

It still feels a bit weird to be called a “rising luminary” when I’ve just turned 51, but I suppose those memes about it never being too late are accurate. If you’re looking to hang out during PAX Unplugged, the above places are where you can find me, but otherwise reach out via my contact page or catch me in the usual evening socializing spots — IYKYK.

But we’ve still got 2 weeks to go. Plenty of time to get (and recover from) the latest vaccine and source some comfortable masks (especially if you’re traveling or hosting for Thanksgiving), make those travel to-do lists, pick out your favorite sets of dice and decide how much space to leave in your suitcase for shopping. Or, in my case, how many pairs of boots I want to bring and therefore how large a bag I need to lug with me onto the train!

See y’all in Philly in a few weeks! 💖
