dream a little dream…
Last night I watched The Dreamers (A young American studying in Paris in 1968 strikes up a friendship with a French brother and sister. Set against the background of the ’68 Paris student riots.). Simple synopsis, intricate plot. I had the NC-17 version so I got to see whatever 3 minutes were cut from the R-rated version.
I liked it, I was afraid that it was going to be very mushy and that I’d hate it, but it was a very good film, full on for indie cred, though hardly an indie production. The sex and nudity was rampant, true, but not overwhelming (sadly, no boy/boy action, but all the subtext in the world). The bigger story was the friendship developing, the odd relationship between the siblings and how it is observed through the eyes of their American friend, and the contrast of three young people who mostly stay in an apartment for a month while the Paris riots go on all around them. They stay inside, talking the good talk while keeping themselves protected. And at the end of it all, each character defines their rol
e very clearly. Visually stunning, too.
My ratings would probably be based around how many times I chose to hit “pause” on the dvd player (not counting phone calls or potty breaks). I only paused this movie once, to make a cup of tea.
