addictions: Darwinia

The world of Darwinia is a virtual themepark, running inside a computer network built by a computer genius named Dr Sepulveda. Darwinia is populated by a sentient evolving life form called the Darwinians. They are the product of a decades worth of research into genetic algorithms.

Unfortunately, the systems of Darwinia have been overrun by an evil red Viral Infection. This Virus has multiplied out of control and must be stopped. Your task is to destroy the Viral Infection and save the Darwinians from extinction.

Sean mentioned this game to me and I got the demo last night and while it only has one level/tutorial, I was kinda hooked.

It’s sort of a Lemmings meets Tron, a good review is here. You don’t have control over your individual citizens, only the ‘armies’, officers and engineers. And there’s no easy click-button interface, a lot of the controls come from mouse gestures. To create an army squad last night I hit the Alt-key and draw a rough triangle, which executes the “Squad” Program. More complicated gestures gave them weapons like Rockets and Air Strikes. It’s the kinda of thing that could easily become addictive without even realizing why.

In other news, I guess I really should make some sort of effort to fill out my wish list, but I’m sure anyone getting me anything’s already done got me whatever they’re getting me, or something like that.
