culture: Towel Day
Do you know where your towel is?
Towel Day is an annual celebration on the 25th of May, as a tribute to the late author Douglas Adams (1952-2001). On that day, fans around the universe proudly carry a towel in his honour.
Proudly show the world you’ve observed Towel Day. You’re encouraged to upload a picture on Flickr (tag it “towelday”) or a video YouTube. There’s also a Flickr Towel Day group.
The Towel Day website has a list of events happening around the world to commemorate this year so check it out. And if you want some wallpapers to decorate your desktop or mobile devices, Travis Avery has come up with some great ones for 2011.
So don’t be surprised today if you tend to notice that your passersby happen to be hoopy froods who may have been able to hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where their towel is. And above all, remember the advice that Douglas Adams left with us that is applicable in all situations…
I think I might cue up The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy on Netflix–always in my queue regardless–over my lunch break to properly celebrate the day.
Update: As we know from the Guide, there are not only plenty of staggeringly unlikely coincidences, but also a large number of predestination paradoxes as well. So I find it fitting that in honor of Towel Day, Difford’s Guide has chosen the Bohemian Iced Tea as their cocktail for May 25.
We, like Adams’ anti-hero, Arthur Dent, rather prefer a nice cup of tea. Earl Grey, to be precise. And that is what we will be drinking today. With a few additions, of course. Such as peach, honey liqueur, and the Czech favourite Becherovka. All of which transform it into a refreshing, engaging Bohemian Iced Tea.
- 11⁄2 shot Becherovka liqueur
- 1⁄2 shot Ketel One vodka
- 1⁄2 shot Krupnik spiced honey liqueur
- 1⁄2 shot Peach Tree peach schnapps
- 21⁄2 shots Cold earl gray tea
Stir ingredients with ice and strain into ice-filled old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon zest.
Happy Towel Day!
