fan trailers: Green Lantern as it could be

Green Lantern Ring on a gloved hand

Since today is apparently Geek Pride Day,* it wouldn’t be right to let the day pass without a very geeky post. Both Marvel and DC have had their fair share of attempts at bringing long-standing comic book characters to the big screen** for better or worse. X-Men, Batman, Iron Man, Superman, Fantastic Four… all have done well enough, but sadly, there’s just something missing in turning a comic book into a movie. The two major factors being suspension of disbelief, even for a fantastical subject, and the legacy of comic book fiction.

All that said, it still leaves a huge field open for fans to create their own movie shorts and trailers that are often closer to the way things should be or should have been done. The Green Lantern movie has still failed to materialize any concrete information, but YouTube user JaronPitts has created a very believable Green Lantern trailer featuring Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan, using clips from nearly 30 movies & TV shows and it’s… well, to call it amazing doesn’t really do it justice:

I think YouTube or G4 need to have a contest or set of awards for fan-created trailers.

Meh. Granted it’s nothing I could do, and he did do it well, but I’ve seen far, far better, like ones with original content rather than just mash-ups of existing footage.

I think I just had a geek-gasm. I especially loved the “Captain Tight Pants” Firefly insider joke. Again, geek-gasm.

I’d say that is pretty damn cool considering it is entirely created using footage from other things.
