food: Bake Sale update!
You do know there’s a bake sale this Saturday, right? 14th & U Farmers Market, 9a-1p, supplied and staffed by your local DC food bloggers? If you’re one of my regular readers*, of course you do!
I’ll be honest, I normally shy away from the charitable eating season, also known as CFC in the office because it often means overpriced store-bought baked goods or relying on the cooking of co-workers that you barely know. And it’s always sugary and/or fattening foods. Continental breakfasts, chili cook-offs, hot dogs & chips, belgian waffles, etc. Has no one ever heard of fruit or salad!?**
But I digress, especially as I’m about to sound like the biggest hypocrite ever… I have a rough list of who will be bringing what for sale and yes, it’s all baked goods, it is for charity and it’s bound to fatten you up–if you overindulge:
Adventures in Shaw: Heath Bar Cookies & Coconut Almond Chocolate Macaroons
- A Halloween edition of her Vanilla Buttermilk Cupcakes will also be one of the prizes for the costume contest!
Thrifty DC Cook: Spice Cupcakes, Rice Krispies Treats, Brownies & Caramel Apples
- Friends of Thrifty DC will also be making: Ginger Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies and… Puppy Chow?***
Arugula Files: M&M Cookies & Candy Apples
Gradually Greener: Chocolate Loaf Cake
Karen Makes Sense: Pumpkin Pie Bars
Macheesmo: Snickerdoodles
Update! Modern Domestic: Mint Chocolate Whoopie Pies & Chocolate Cupcakes w/Peanut Butter Frosting
State Dinner: Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread
As I said, that’s a rough list, but you can see that we’re not going to lack for goodies! In addition to the Bake Sale, will still be all the great farmers market sellers to stock your pantry. So maybe skip the trip to Whole Foods–if you’re a regular person, Safeway/Giant, if you’re a middle of the road person, Harris Teeter–and stop on by to say hello, browse the wares, support local food and help a good cause.
Hope to see you there!
If I missed any bloggers’ contributions, drop me a line to let me know.
* I think I finally need to use two hands to count you all.
** The same goes for school sales drives. When I was a kid, we sold wrapping paper, greeting cards, gift baskets and boxes of fruit. Nowadays the only thing people come into the office trying to sell for their kids is candy bars, cookies, pizzas, cakes and pie. Bah!
*** Yes, it’s a real snack. I looked it up and it sounds delicious.
What? I didn’t know! I feel so out of it! I will have to remember to bring extra money Saturday. It will be interesting to see the Battle of the Whoopie pies since this market is known for its beloved Pumpkin Whoopie pies.

Excellent. I’ll e-mail you with my shopping list.

Hey – I think I met you at the DC Blogger Happy Hour a couple months back. I’ve actually changed my cupcake offering from pumpkin to chocolate with peanut butter frosting (I know, I’m fickle). Excited to see everyone, and their baked goods, tomorrow!
